1. Our Testing Philosophy
A smart home product is only as good as it is to actually live with. Specs tell you what a device is supposed to do; only hands-on use tells you whether it does it reliably, in a real home, on a real network, next to the other devices you already own. Every review on GoHaus is built on that principle — we test the product, not the marketing.
2. How We Select Products
We can't test every smart home product on the market, so we prioritize based on a consistent set of criteria:
- —Market relevance — best-sellers and category leaders across the regions we cover;
- —New releases and meaningful firmware or hardware revisions of products we've already reviewed;
- —Reader requests and questions we see repeated across comments and search;
- —Category gaps — making sure every price tier and ecosystem (Matter, HomeKit, Alexa, Google Home) is represented.
Units are either purchased at retail or provided by the manufacturer or retailer for testing. Where a unit was provided free of charge, that is disclosed in the review — it never affects the score. See Editorial Independence below.
3. Our Testing Process
Every product goes through the same five stages before a review is published:
Sourcing & Setup
We set the product up exactly as a first-time buyer would — retail packaging, in-app onboarding, default settings, no manufacturer shortcuts.
Real-World Use
The product lives in an actual home for a minimum of two weeks — alongside the other smart devices, Wi-Fi congestion, and daily routine it would face in normal use.
Lab & Field Benchmarks
Where applicable, we run repeatable benchmarks — battery run-time, response latency, range and signal drop-off, video/audio quality, sensor accuracy — and log the results.
Scoring & Peer Review
The tester's notes and benchmark data are converted into the five GoHaus sub-scores, then reviewed by a second editor before a GoHaus Score is finalized.
Editorial Write-Up
Findings are written up in plain language — strengths, weaknesses, who it's actually best for — and published with the testing period noted on the review.
4. The GoHaus Score Explained
Every reviewed product receives one GoHaus Score out of 10 — our overall editorial verdict, shown in gold at the top of every review. It's a weighted average of five sub-scores, each rated independently during testing:
Performance
Does it do the core job well and consistently?
Build Quality
Materials, construction, and finish under everyday handling.
Value
What you get relative to typical street price in-category.
Ease of Use
Setup friction, app experience, and daily-use simplicity.
Durability
Expected lifespan, warranty coverage, and long-term reliability signals.
Weightings shift slightly by category — for example, Durability carries more weight for security cameras and locks, while Ease of Use carries more for hubs and displays — but Performance is always the largest single factor. A score of 9.0+ carries the "Editor's Choice" badge; nothing is scored above 10 or below 0, and there are no half-point bonuses for marketing claims.
5. What We Evaluate, By Category
The five sub-scores above are the constant. What we actually check under each one changes by category:
Smart Speakers & Displays
Voice recognition accuracy, audio quality, far-field pickup, multi-room sync, ecosystem compatibility.
Security Cameras
Video/night-vision quality, motion-detection accuracy, false-alert rate, local vs. cloud storage, app latency.
Smart Locks
Lock/unlock response time, connection reliability, battery life, physical tamper resistance, backup access methods.
Robot Vacuums
Suction across floor types, navigation/mapping accuracy, obstacle avoidance, noise level, bin/dock maintenance.
Smart Lighting
Color accuracy, brightness range and dimming smoothness, scene/automation reliability, hub dependency.
Thermostats
Temperature-sensing accuracy, scheduling flexibility, HVAC compatibility, energy-report usefulness.
Plugs, Switches & Sensors
Response latency, physical footprint/fit, load rating accuracy, automation trigger reliability.
6. Editorial Independence
GoHaus earns affiliate commission when readers buy through links on this site. That relationship never touches the testing process or the score: the people who test a product and assign its sub-scores have no visibility into, or stake in, its affiliate performance, and a higher score does not mean a higher commission rate. If a product performs poorly, we say so — commission structure is not a factor considered at any stage of testing, scoring, or write-up.
7. Who Tests Our Products
Reviews are produced by GoHaus Labs, our in-house testing team. Each review lists the tester and the testing window (for example, "Tested by GoHaus Labs · 30+ hours · May 2025") directly beneath the headline, and every score is checked by a second editor before publication so no single reviewer's bias decides a verdict alone.
8. Re-Testing & Updates
Smart home products change after launch through firmware and app updates, so a review isn't necessarily final. We re-test and revise a review's score when a significant firmware update changes core functionality, a product is discontinued or replaced by a successor, or readers report a consistent, verifiable issue we didn't observe during testing. Every review shows when it was last tested so you always know how current the verdict is.
